We’ve answered the most common questions from practitioners considering this training.
The certification is designed for breathwork practitioners, coaches, and health professionals who want a deeper scientific understanding of breathing, human psychophysiology and how to apply it responsibly in practice.
Many participants already work with clients in areas such as wellbeing, performance, rehabilitation, or coaching and want to operate with greater professional confidence and clarity.
No formal scientific background is required.
However, the training is academically rigorous and designed for practitioners who are genuinely interested in understanding the physiology behind breathing and applying that knowledge responsibly.
Curiosity and willingness to study are far more important than prior academic training.
Many breathwork trainings focus primarily on techniques and experiences.
The Breath Science Certification isn't a breath work certification. It's a graduate-level education that focuses on the mechanisms behind breathing, including respiratory physiology, nervous system regulation, sleep science, and structured assessment.
The goal is to develop practitioners who can confidently explain, assess, and apply breathing, wellness and performance interventions within professional environments and high level consulting.
The certification runs across 7-9 months, allowing time to integrate the scientific knowledge, practical frameworks, and practitioner thinking required to work at a professional level.
This structure ensures participants can gradually develop understanding while applying what they learn.
Most participants dedicate 5-7 hours per week to study, practice, and integration.
Because the training runs over a longer period, it is designed to fit alongside professional work and personal commitments.
Yes.
One of the core goals of the certification is to help practitioners move beyond simply guiding breathing exercises and instead develop the ability to assess individuals, understand underlying mechanisms, and apply structured interventions.
This leads to more effective and responsible client work.
Not necessarily.
Some participants are already breathwork practitioners, while others come from related fields such as coaching, physiotherapy, fitness, psychology, or wellness.
What matters most is a genuine interest in understanding breathing and applying it in a professional context.
Once you complete the survey, you will be invited to book a short fit call.
During this conversation we explore your background, your goals as a practitioner, and whether the Breath Science Certification is the right step for you.
This helps ensure the training is a good match for everyone involved.
The School of Breath Science provides professional education in breathing, nervous system regulation, and resilience. Our work prioritises physiology, psychological safety, and real-world application over rigid methods, performance, or technique accumulation.
The school was founded by Martin McPhilimey, a practitioner and educator with a background in respiratory science, physiology, and applied nervous system training. His work focuses on helping professionals develop judgement, restraint, and responsibility when working with breath-led practices.
This training reflects the school’s commitment to ethical practice, gradual exposure, and long-term capacity building. It is designed to support professionals working in real environments with real people — safely and responsibly.
Grounded in physiology and nervous system science
Emphasis on safety, sequencing, and professional judgement
Designed for real-world application, not ideal conditions
